The Belmont Report, constructed in response to deplorable past ethical breaches, ostensibly articulated the ethical ground rules for human research activities. In fact, this seminal report spawned the modern clinical trials enterprise. As we enter the fourth decade of the era defined by this transformative document, the time seems opportune to reflect on the past and examine future implications for clinical investigators.
